BALAKLAVA

The Crimea. Sevastopol and BalaklavaBalaklava is one of the most ancient cities of the Crimea peninsula. The city is located in a narrow, picturesque bay surrounded by mountain picks on all sides. Many explorers associate Balaclava with the bay described in “Odissea” by Homer. The majestic remains of the medieval Genoese fortress Chembalo rise near the entrance to Balaklava bay.

The museum of submarines

In 1957-1961 during the “cold war” period in the mountains on the western coast of Balaklava bay a unique underground harbour with a submarine-repair and service plant was built. The complex is covered by the rock which is 126 metres high and it can survive the bombing as powerful as 100 kilotons which is five times more powerful than the explosion of the Hiroshima bomb.

The underwater canal punched in the rock connects the underground construction with the open sea.
